GAS CITY, Ind. (AP) — Amcast Industrial Corp. will continue to make automobile parts for General Motors Corp. until the spring, court records show, but it is unclear whether the two companies will keep doing business with each other for long.
The Fremont-based Amcast filed for bankruptcy protection this month, blaming a loss of revenue from GM, its biggest customer.
It was the second time in a year the auto parts maker sought bankruptcy protection.
GM spokesman Tom Wickham said Thursday that he could not comment on future dealings between the two companies.
"There is a continuation of supply," he said. "Beyond that I'm not going into any other detail."
Amcast stopped all deliveries of previously ordered wheels on Nov. 30, the day before it filed for bankruptcy protection. But a deal with GM that included price increases and $1.6 million payment for employees' retention or severance payments kept the shipments going.
GM said it would have to shut down production plants without the Amcast materials.
Amcast makes aluminum wheels for cars and trucks and aluminum casting used with auto suspensions, brake systems and steering knuckles.
The company has about 720 workers at plants in the Indiana communities of Fremont, Franklin and Gas City.
